Olivine becomes a DRP
October 6th, 2010 by Spence Gerber
Note: this is one in a series of posts chronicling the Olivine Power of Us™ PDR Proof of Concept.
The CAISO created the Proxy Demand Resource (PDR) product and requires that Demand Response Providers (DRP) register PDRs in the CAISO Demand Response System (DRS). A DRP is a key link between retail customers and the wholesale market. A DRP can be (but is not required to be) a Demand Response Aggregator who has existing relationships with retail customers and is familiar with their demand response capability.
Since most individual customers do not meet the minimum response capability of 100kW required in the CAISO market, aggregation of a number of customers into a single PDR expands, and complicates, the possibilities associated with DR in California. Individual customer information that is known to an aggregator (service address, account number, curtailable demand) is required to register a PDR in the CAISO DRS. It is envisioned that a DRP would manage the customer specific information in a registration that a Scheduling Coordinator might not be familiar with or have access to.
Since Olivine is dedicated to advancing demand response in California, and Olivine principals participated in the PDR Working Group, it was logical to jump in as a DRP to advance the cause. Today we were assigned a DRP ID.
